Hangzhou, China, December, 12, 2025 – Geely Auto announced on December 12th that its first global plug-in hybrid SUV, the Geely STARRAY EM-i (also known as Geely EX5 EM-i in some regions), has achieved the prestigious five-star safety rating from the Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme). This marks the second five-star accolade for Geely’s new energy product lineup, reaffirming the brand’s leadership in global NEV safety technologies and its long-standing commitment to user safety.
As one of the world’s most authoritative vehicle safety assessment bodies, Euro NCAP is known for rigorous testing standards and a highly transparent evaluation methodology. Its assessments encompass adult and child occupant protection, pedestrian and vulnerable road user safety, and active safety performance. The five-star rating is widely regarded within the industry as a benchmark for top-tier global automotive safety. This achievement of Geely STARRAY EM-i underscores its world-class safety performance across all key categories.
Developed on the GEA (Global Intelligent Electric Architecture) platform, the Geely STARRAY EM-i incorporates three native safety innovations: physical isolation, dedicated protection, and tiered layout. The vehicle features independent isolated channels for the fuel tank and battery systems, ensuring complete separation of fuel, gas, and electrical subsystems. A 140 mm optimized safety clearance prevents fuel tank deformation in front or rear impacts, outperforming non-native hybrid platforms.
Purpose-built 6 horizontal and 4 vertical protective frames and six 360° collision-protection rings around the fuel tank create a comprehensive structural safety envelope, delivering uninterrupted load-path protection for both the fuel tank and battery pack. Meanwhile, a stepped underbody safety design, paired with a high-strength anti-scratch beam positioned 10 mm below the battery, further enhances passive safety. The GEA platform also inherits Geely’s proven safety DNA, including the signature “clover-leaf crash structure” and other advanced crash-management designs.
In terms of active safety, the Geely STARRAY EM-i also demonstrates outstanding performance. The model is equipped with 14 L2-level ADAS features, integrating Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). These systems work together to sense the driving environment, predict potential hazards, and deliver multi-layered, all-scenario active protection.
By 2025, the Geely STARRAY EM-i had been introduced in more than 10 countries, including Australia, Italy, Poland, Mexico, South Africa, and Indonesia, earning widespread recognition and strong acclaim from overseas users. In November 2025, the Geely STARRAY EM-i achieved the No. 2 sales ranking among all PHEV models in the Australian passenger cars market, according to VFACTS, 2025. Moving into 2026, the Geely STARRAY EM-i will further accelerate its global expansion, entering key international markets such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Brazil, strengthening its global presence.
Beyond its robust safety performance, the model delivers an exceptional balance of space, comfort, and driving dynamics, staying true to Geely’s human-centric and “all-domain safety” philosophy.
With its newly awarded five-star Euro NCAP rating, proven product quality, and strong competitive capabilities, the Geely STARRAY EM-i further strengthens Geely’s global reputation in new energy vehicle safety and lays a solid foundation for the brand’s continued international expansion.
